Teeth Whitening

A sparkling smile starts with gleaming white teeth. Our pain-free whitening treatment options improve the appearance of lacklustre teeth by removing stains that are locked into the enamel or the natural tooth structure. The professional process differs from whitening toothpastes, which only remove superficial stains. Deep set tea, coffee, or pasta sauce stains can be removed, making your smile look years younger. Choose your shade with one of our dental experts, then whiten your smile in chair or in the comfort of your own home.

Whiter, brighter smile

Natural white? Extra bright? Up to 8 shades whiter in a single in-chair whitening appointment with Adawn and 6 shades whiter with a customised take-home whitening kit.

A more confident you

Whether you’re giving a presentation at work, on a date or having your photograph taken, you will want a sparkling smile you’re proud to show off.

Youthful appearance

Did you know that teeth which match the whites of your eyes make you look years younger?

Stain removal

Teeth whitening can remove unwanted stubborn stains, providing a whiter appearance immediately. Deep set tea, coffee, or wine stains can be removed, making your smile look years younger.

Sit back and relax

Watch your favourite show on Netflix, take a nap or listen to tunes you love while your smile brightens in chair, or better yet whiten at home while you sleep!

Why do teeth stain?

The outer layer of teeth called enamel is made of a crystalline porous structure that absorbs stains over time. If these stains are external, they can be brushed or polished off. However, over time, some stains can become embedded within the surface of the enamel and cannot be removed by physical means alone. Stains can be from coffee, red wine or acidic fruits, as well as smoking or poor oral hygiene.

Embedded stains need to be broken up chemically by a whitening gel which diffuses, usually containing the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching agent). The bleach is able to penetrate into the enamel and break apart the staining agents through an oxidation reaction- similar to removing stubborn stains in clothing.

What is the difference between in chair whitening and a take home kit?

Both in chair whitening and at home whitening are effective. The short answer is that in-chair whitening is faster, but the at-home whitening is longer lasting and causes less sensitivity. If you’re short on time and want the most effective result, the best option is in-chair whitening and with a follow up of at- home whitening.

At Adawn, we used Opalescence Boost for our in-chair whitening. Opalescence Boost is a “light-free” whitening method that’s chemically activated and whitens without UV light. So, if you’re sensitive to heat or the bright lights, Opalescence Boost is a great alternative to ZOOM! Especially if you tend to have hypersensitive teeth. Whitening without light-activated gel tends to be gentler on some people’s enamel and we are a fan of it.

How we provide this service

Step One - Consultation

We always start with a consultation where we will discuss your suitability for whitening and which option suits your needs.

Step Two - In Chair Whitening

In this visit we begin by polishing your teeth and applying a protective barrier to protect your gums. A whitening gel, usually containing active ingredient hydrogen peroxide, is applied to the teeth while you watch your favourite show on Netflix. Then it is time to enjoy your brighter smile.

For Take Home Whitening

Moulds are taken of your teeth to fabricate your customised whitening trays. Each tray is made in-house by us and personalised specifically to you. No one else can wear them.

In 7 days, your trays will be ready for pick up and we encourage you to try them on at this visit to ensure the perfect fit. You will receive 4 syringes of whitening gel which will last you 3 weeks and these can be for day whitening or night whitening.

You can start your whitening immediately. If you need more whitening gel, you can either pick it up from our studio or we can post it out to you. All instructions will be given at your appointment.

The Suite

We’ve carefully curated our space to make the time you spend at Adawn as enjoyable, calming and comfortable as possible.

Safety First

A safer way to care for you

Above all else, safety is our priority.

While some industries are adjusting to a New Normal of safety measures, they’ve always been normal for us. After every patient, each of our clinical rooms is sanitised and our equipment sterilised. Our team also wears enhanced PPE (gloves, masks and protective eyewear), undergoes daily health checks and laundry service, and our COVID Safe plan is always up to date in line with Victorian Department of Health requirements.

Cutting edge technology

The technology available can completely change the patient experience and so we invest in the best. The state of the art equipment we have in house means we can craft finer restorations, detect problems earlier, reduce treatment time and even create custom appliances when we need to.

Designed for comfort

Going to the dentist can be uncomfortable and intimidating. It may even make you anxious. At Adawn, you are always in control of your experience. We have several options available to help our patients feel as comfortable as possible from Netflix and noise cancelling headphones, head rests and blankets, right through to sedation or general anaesthetic. We’re not comfortable unless you are.

Frequently asked questions

How long does whitening last?

Teeth whitening results can vary from patient-to-patient depending on the amount of straining. Professional in-chair whitening generally can last from 6-12 months. Take home whitening will generally last 1-2 years but can be easily topped up at home twice a year to maintain the desired shade.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some patients do experience sensitivity during or after whitening treatments. We recommend sensitive toothpaste to help with the discomfort and this can be purchased at our studio. Any sensitivity usually dissipates within 12-24 hours. If sensitivity persists beyond this, we encourage patients to contact us.

Is in-chair whitening using a light more effective than other systems?

In-chair whitening systems that are light activated like ZOOM have become very popular over the years. ZOOM whitening works very well however many people complain that their teeth get very sensitive afterwards. That is because the light produces a lot of heat and dehydrates the teeth- this initially produces a very white result, but the research suggests that it is only short lived and once the teeth rehydrate, the result is not as impressive. This is why at Adawn, we use whitening systems without a light like Opalescence BOOST, as it has a higher concentration of whitening gel with no light and the result is just as effective but with reduced dehydration and sensitivity.

Is in-chair whitening safe?

The technique used when performing in-chair whitening helps protect the gums and the rest of the mouth from the strong whitening gel that is used to whiten the teeth. As a result, the only thing that the whitening gel contacts is the enamel. Therefore, it is crucial that whoever does your whitening is an oral health professional as we understand the mouth and oral tissues.

Is hydrogen peroxide safe?

Whitening gel comes in 2 forms, hydrogen peroxide (HP) which is used for daytime take-home whitening (usually an hour a day) or carbamide peroxide (CP) which is used for night-time whitening as it is slow release and gets broken down into HP. The whitening gel should only be used in custom-made trays that are specifically fabricated for an individual. If this is the case and you don’t overfill the tray, then the amount of hydrogen peroxide that is ingested is negligible and does not cause any harm.

Will whitening my teeth damage them?

Not at all. This is a common myth but is not true. Whitening gel breaks down the discolouration within the tooth and draws it out, leaving the tooth whiter. It has no harmful impact on dental enamel.

Can I whiten my veneers or filings?

Teeth whitening only works on natural enamel and not on any restorative material. If you have fillings or veneers and you’d like to whiten your teeth, then it is possible that you may need to update the restorations to a whiter colour to match the new whiter colour of your teeth.

Can I whiten my teeth if pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Whitening is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How often can I top up my at home whitening?

As often as you want. The only side effect that might hold you back is sensitivity.
